Whether you like it or not, J.J. Abrams is back to direct the final installment of the latest Star Wars Trilogy, Episode IX. After experiencing delays, the film will have a new director, and The Force Awakens director is not being welcomed with open arms from everyone. In addition, Abrams will be co-writing Episode IX with Chris Terrio, who was a writer on Argo, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, and the upcoming Justice League.
I have mixed feelings about this. For me, The Force Awakens was just an average film, better than others in the saga, but not great. I was hoping that Episode IX would be directed by Rogue One director, Gareth Edwards. Rogue One rivals my favorite Star Wars film, The Empire Strikes Back, for the top spot. I know that J.J. Abrams had the difficult task of bridging the long gap between the original trilogy and The Force Awakens, but I believe there was a bit too much borrowed from A New Hope and nostalgia, and maybe a few to many bad comedic bits. I would have liked the film to feature a little more grit and darkness that made Rogue One a great film.
Star Wars: Episode IX had a schedule release date of May 24, 2019, but has since been pushed back to December of 2019 due to the shake-up. Stay tuned!
