Dining with the Dreamers: Pongu Pongu

By: Amy Kawa

There are very few things that bring us more joy than Disney food.  I mean, who doesn’t love Dole Whips, Mickey Bars, PB&J milkshakes, and Disney popcorn?  We have been all over the map when it comes to food options in the parks, resorts, and Disney Springs- table service, character dining, quick service, signature dining, snack carts – you name it. As we begin to craft our reviews of the places where we’ve enjoyed some delicious Disney delicacies, we’ll give you our opinions on the atmosphere, service, and quality of the food we ordered.

We know that every Disney dining experience may be different, so please let us know if you’ve eaten at these places, and tell us your experience!

Pong Pongu

Location: Disney’s Animal Kingdom Theme Park – Pandora

Reservation Info: This is essentially a well-themed drink stand with one signature snack, the Pongu Limpia.

Meal, Time, Party Size: Snack; 4:30 p.m.; 2

Crowd Level: We waited for only a few minutes in a line of about four guests.  It may because Pandora is still a relatively new area of the Animal Kingdom, but all of the places within the land seem incredibly well-staffed.

Atmosphere: The stand itself is so well-themed, it literally blends so well into Pandora’s surroundings we almost missed it!  Pongu Pongu is located right between the Windtraders shop and Satu’li Canteen. The large, robot-looking thing that the humans used in the war with the Na’vi at the end of Avatar stands guard outside the ordering area.  The area around Pongu Pongu seems more crowded than it really is, as the stand is relatively small, so the ordering area and pick-up window are one in the same. If you want to grab a seat while you enjoy your Pandorian treats, you can grab one of the outdoors tables at the Canteen.

To the Menu: Like all true Disney food enthusiasts, we scour menus before we get to Walt Disney World, so we have a pretty good idea of what we are going to order before we even get to the restaurant/stand.  In this case, members of our party ordered:

  1.  Pongu Limpia (Pineapple Cream Cheese Spring Roll)… $2.99
    • Comments from diner 1: “I had really high expectations for this!  I love pineapple and I love cream cheese, and the cast member who took my order told me that a fresh batch was coming out of the oven, so I thought I was getting the best of all of the worlds!  Then, I took my first bite.  It tricked me because at first, I thought I really liked it, but the more I ate, the more I didn’t like it.  I know.  I’m weird.  The Limpia really became a warm, goopy mess.  I also learned that I don’t like warm cream cheese.  Unfortunately, I’m going to pass on this one for the foreseeable future.”
  2. The Night Blossom – Non-Alcoholic Specialty Beverage (Mixture of Limeade with Apple and Desert Pear flavors topped with Passion Fruit Boba Balls)… $5.99
    • Comments from diner 2: “I wanted to try this because I love a good frozen drink, and I am a sucker for foods that are a signature to each park (I’m looking at you, Dole Whips!).  My first impression was how beautiful the drink was – smart to put it in a clear cup!  Then, I took my first, blissful sip.  It’s like a tangy cup of frozen deliciousness. You can really taste the pear and apple come through.  It tastes exactly like the drink version of an Itzakadoozie, which was a long, yellow popsicle with different colors and flavors throughout that Disney used to sell at their ice cream bar carts.  I used to LOVE these things, and Disney recreated it for me in a drink!  On a hot day, it’s a perfect drink to cool you off too (albeit also offer quite the sugar rush).  Oh, and don’t forget those boba balls on top.  They explode with juice in your mouth!  If that’s wrong, then I don’t want to be right. Add a huge paper straw (I LOVE the signature Animal Kingdom paper straws), and this is a instant repeat, theme park must-have for me!”

*There is the option to buy the Night Blossom in a souvenir mug or with a glow cube, (Unadelta Seed-shaped) for quite the price upgrade… $14.99*

*There is an entire menu of alcoholic beverages as well, including margaritas and a Pandora beer selection.*

Food MVP: The Night Blossom

Overall Review: 7/10
