Disney has announced that it will soon be rolling out a test for select resort guests at the Polynesian Village Resort and Grand Floridian where guests can use their cell phone, connected via Bluetooth, to open their hotel rooms. While the technology is being used throughout the hotel industry, this feature is new on Disney property.
Amy’s take: While this is a cool feature, I really don’t see it’s purpose. Why invest in developing this technology when the MagicBand works perfectly fine? I suppose this is step one in trying to phase out MagicBands, which is somewhat ironic considering how much money Disney spent developing the bands in the first place. Guests can now order and pay for food at most quick service restaurants via their My Disney Experience account on their phone. Now, they can use their phone as a room key. Will park tickets and fastpasses be next? Time will tell.
